New Year new Decisions

With a new year we have new gifts and inevitably new challenges. As we look towards our obligations and goals for 2025 many clients have been wondering if their portfolio is properly positioned for the new year. Having navigated an interest rate hiking cycle, fixed income investors now face a completely different challenge in 2025. Many investors are working to ensure their portfolio is accurately positioned for coming changes.

Current sentiment is that the US Federal Reserve (FED) will most likely bring rates down in the in 2025. How the Fed makes their decision will depend largely on economic data as the year progresses. With expected changes in mind, in last week’s Sterling Report, my colleague Eugene highlighted that corporate bonds are a compelling investment choice for those seeking steady returns with manageable risk. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you would like to add corporate bonds to your portfolio for 2025.

Corporate bonds often offer higher yields than government securities, making them an attractive choice for investors looking to maximize income in a lower-rate environment. Investors should look for companies with strong corporate fundamentals. Ultimately you want to invest in companies with strong corporate balance sheets. Focus on issuers that are AAA to BBB rated on the investment grade spectrum. Seek companies that have stood the test of time in different economic cycles. This shows that these companies are able to meet their debt obligations in periods of economic volatility.

As Central banks also work towards stabilizing inflation higher yielding instruments will be incredibly valuable to the fixed income investor. Clients will want to lock into instruments where their yields are surpassing inflation so as not to erode their spending power and real return. Corporate bonds in this scenario can help provide a balanced and effective way to generate income without excessive risk.

Diversification is always a key component of any balanced portfolio. Adding corporate bonds allows for diversification in the allocation of fixed income portfolios. These bonds can help smooth out the overall volatility of an investment portfolio, making them an essential tool for risk management. Investors can choose corporate bonds across different sectors, industries, and geographies to achieve an optimal balance between risk and return. With proper selection, investors can access high-quality bonds from various sectors, such as technology, healthcare, and consumer goods, while still ensuring a level of stability in their portfolio.

Investors can also keep an eye out for new issues. Corporations may be looking to raise capital and will issue new bonds. Investors may use these bonds to enhance a ladder in their investments. Bond laddering is a strategy of buying bonds with different maturity dates to create a steady income stream and manage interest rate risk. New issues give opportunities to lock in favourable yields in improved market conditions.

For fixed-income investors in 2025, corporate bonds present an attractive opportunity to achieve a stable income stream with a manageable level of risk. To navigate the financial landscape of 2025 a careful and strategic approach for investors is essential. Give yourself the gift of stability for the new year and consult with a licensed financial advisor on how to structure your portfolio to make use of the best opportunities available.
