Enjoy the Season Without Dreading January

In recent conversations with clients, we keep returning to the same thought: the year is flying by. As September ends, the final months are closer than they seem, and preparation can make them easier to enjoy. Gifts, travel, meals and family activities arrive in pieces, making their combined cost easy to underestimate. Preparation now can make the season truly enjoyable without burdening January.

Whether you celebrate a religious holiday, gather with family or take a year-end break, your spending may rise. Start by remembering what you spent last year. Include obvious purchases, such as gifts and groceries, alongside easier-to-forget costs: transport, outings, and contributions to gatherings. Then decide what you can afford after your bills, debt payments and savings commitments. Your spending plan should reflect your income, rather than an ideal version of it.

Next, turn that total into a monthly target. If you expect to spend $120,000 and have October and November to prepare, setting aside $60,000 each month is more manageable than finding the entire amount in December. If the figure feels uncomfortable, adjust the plan now. You could shorten the gift list, agree on spending limits with relatives or host one gathering instead of several. Planning early gives you choices that last-minute pressure often takes away.

Where you keep that money matters. Money you need in a few months should be accessible when the bills arrive. A separate savings account or an appropriate short-term, liquid investment will help you keep this money distinct from everyday spending. Check access, fees and any restrictions before choosing where to put it. This money has a near deadline, so it should not depend on market gains to meet your target.

Equally important, protect the investments you have built for bigger goals. Retirement savings, a child’s education fund or a longer-term bond portfolio should have a purpose beyond one season. Having a dedicated fund reduces the temptation to interrupt those plans or sell an investment at an inconvenient time. Even small, regular contributions can preserve the habit of investing while you prepare to celebrate.

Credit cards can be useful for convenience, but they can also blur the difference between what you can buy and what you can afford. Before charging a purchase, ask whether the money to repay it is already in your plan. If it is not, the real cost of that purchase may follow you well into the new year. Rewards points are seldom worth carrying a balance you did not intend to have.

Finally, leave some room for surprises. A modest buffer can cover an unexpected guest, a higher grocery bill or an invitation you want to accept. You can enjoy the season without saying yes to every expense. The aim is to make space for experiences that fit your life. When you spend with intention and keep your other goals moving, the memories can outlast the bills while your plans for next year remain on track.
