Investing in Jamaica’s Future: Sterling Supports Anchovy High School

Key Takeaways

  • Sterling Asset Management donated eight Dell computer systems to Anchovy High School in St. James.
  • The donation will help restore educational resources lost following hurricane damage to the school’s Junior Campus.
  • Students will use the equipment for Information Technology, EDPM and Business Education.
  • Investment in education supports digital literacy, career readiness and long-term economic participation.
  • Sterling’s community investment approach reflects its commitment to creating sustainable value across Jamaica.

Investing Beyond Financial Markets

Investing in Jamaica is not limited to financial markets, business expansion or infrastructure. It also means supporting the people, skills and educational opportunities that will shape the country’s future.

At Sterling Asset Management Ltd., investment is about creating long-term value. While the company helps individuals and institutions pursue their financial goals through professional investment management, it also recognises the importance of strengthening the communities in which Jamaicans live, learn and work.

That commitment was demonstrated on 30 June 2026, when Sterling donated eight Dell computer systems, including computers, monitors and keyboards, to Anchovy High School in St. James.

The equipment will help replace technology lost after hurricane damage affected the computer laboratory at the school’s Junior Campus. More importantly, it will provide students with practical access to the digital tools required for learning, examination preparation and future employment.

Restoring Digital Learning at Anchovy High School

Damage to the Junior Campus disrupted more than the school’s physical facilities. It also reduced students’ access to the technology needed to complete coursework and develop essential digital skills. The Junior Campus lost 35 computer workstations during the hurricane, making Sterling’s donation an important first step in rebuilding students’ access to technology.

While recovery efforts continue, Junior Campus students are being accommodated at Anchovy High School’s Main Campus. Restoring access to reliable educational resources is therefore an important part of helping learners return to a stable and productive academic environment.

Sterling’s eight new Dell systems will become part of the school’s daily teaching resources. Rather than representing a temporary contribution, the equipment will support classroom learning across multiple subject areas for years to come.

This demonstrates how thoughtful community investment can respond to an immediate challenge while contributing to longer-term educational development.

Fayonie Sawyers-McFarlane, Anchovy High’s EDPM Head of Department and Hospitality and Tourism Management teacher, highlighted the difference the donation will make for students:

“With Sterling coming on board to provide these computers, it will have a real impact on the learning process and give students better access to technology, helping them grasp more knowledge and information.”

Supporting CSEC Preparation and Practical Skills

The donated computers will support students preparing for Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate subjects that depend heavily on access to functioning technology.

Information Technology

Information Technology students need regular computer access to apply classroom theory, practise technical skills and become comfortable using digital tools.

Reliable equipment gives students more opportunities to complete practical exercises, conduct research and prepare for technology-based assessments.

Electronic Document Preparation and Management

Electronic Document Preparation and Management, commonly known as EDPM, develops skills that are directly relevant to modern workplaces.

Students use computers to practise document creation, formatting, data presentation and other administrative tasks. These capabilities can support future roles in business, government, education, tourism and financial services.

Business Education

Technology also strengthens business education by helping students explore administration, finance, entrepreneurship and workplace communication.

Access to computers enables learners to develop practical experience alongside academic knowledge, helping to prepare them for further study, employment or business ownership.

Why Investment in Education Matters

An investment in education can create benefits that extend far beyond one classroom or academic year.

Digital literacy is increasingly important across nearly every area of Jamaica’s economy. Students entering higher education or employment are expected to research online, use workplace software, communicate digitally and adapt to changing technologies.

Without dependable computer access, learners may find it more difficult to build these capabilities. School computer laboratories can help reduce that gap by making technology available within a structured and supportive learning environment.

The value of Sterling’s donation therefore extends beyond the physical equipment. Each computer provides additional opportunities for students to gain knowledge, practise essential skills and prepare for the future.

Michelle Valentine, Assistant Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Sterling, said the donation reflects the company’s belief that investing in education is ultimately an investment in Jamaica’s future.

“When we think of Hurricane Melissa, it’s natural for our minds to go to the physical disruption that took place. What should take equal spotlight, especially for our students, is the disruption to opportunity. When we contacted Dr. Stewart and she mentioned critical areas that required support we recognised that this loss of access to the technology they depend on to learn was a place where we could take action. Investing in the learning continuity of these students is investing in Jamaica’s future.”

From the Classroom to Jamaica’s Future Careers

Skills developed at school can influence the educational and career opportunities available to young people later in life.

Digital competence can support careers in:

  • Finance and accounting
  • Business administration
  • Technology
  • Healthcare
  • Engineering
  • Communications
  • Education
  • Tourism
  • Entrepreneurship

Even jobs that are not traditionally considered technology-focused increasingly require confidence with digital systems.

During Sterling’s visit to Anchovy High School, company representatives engaged with students and heard about their ambitions. These conversations reinforced the purpose behind the initiative: to help create a learning environment in which young people have the tools to pursue their goals with greater confidence.

A Partnership Focused on Lasting Value

The official handover brought together representatives from Sterling and Anchovy High School.

Sterling was represented by

  • Robert Atkinson, Accounting Officer
  • Michelle Valentine, Assistant Vice President of Marketing and Communications
  • Shanique Williamson, Manager of Personal Financial Planning.

The equipment was received by Dr Lavern Stewart, Principal of Anchovy High School; Fayonie Sawyers-McFarlane, EDPM Head of Department; and Grade 8 student Latanya Watson.

The school’s computer lab technician also demonstrated the difference between its older equipment and the newly donated Dell systems, illustrating the practical impact the donation will have on teaching and learning.

By responding to a clearly identified need, Sterling and Anchovy High School have created a partnership whose impact can continue well beyond the presentation ceremony.

Community Investment and Responsible Asset Management

As an asset management company, Sterling helps clients make informed financial decisions intended to protect and grow wealth over time.

The principles behind effective investment management also apply to community development. Both require long-term thinking, careful allocation of resources and a clear understanding of the value an investment is intended to create.

Supporting schools helps strengthen communities. Developing digital skills can prepare young people to participate in a changing economy. Better access to education can create opportunities for families while contributing to a stronger national workforce.

For Sterling, responsible community investment is therefore not separate from its wider purpose. It reflects the same commitment to sustainable value that guides the company’s approach to financial planning and investment.

Why Sterling’s Donation Matters

The eight Dell computer systems will help Anchovy High School:

  • Replace equipment lost following damage to the Junior Campus computer laboratory
  • Restore access to important digital learning resources
  • Support CSEC preparation in Information Technology, EDPM and Business Education
  • Give students more opportunities to develop practical computer skills
  • Improve preparation for higher education and future employment
  • Strengthen the school’s learning environment during the recovery process

Investing in Jamaica Through Opportunity

The donation to Anchovy High School shows that investing in Jamaica can take many forms.

It can mean helping clients build financial security through professional asset management. It can also mean investing in educational resources, digital access and the abilities of young Jamaicans.

As students begin using the new computers, the donation’s value will be reflected not only in the equipment installed but also in the knowledge gained, skills developed and ambitions pursued.

At Sterling, investing is about more than building wealth. It is about helping build stronger communities, brighter opportunities and a more prosperous future for Jamaica.
